Data Scientist Principal Engineer

BGI is seeking a Data Science Principal Engineer.  In this position you are a Data Scientist specializing in military aviation.  You understand the operational context and can relate to different communities in the aviation enterprise.   Analysis of data reveals insights that many communities value - aircrew performance assessment, equipment performance, maintenance trending and model validation are some of the many areas you support.  Your work is highly technical and results in visualizations that are intuitive to users in the community.  You use a combination of off-the-shelf and specialized custom-built tools in exploratory data analysis then transition the logic and reports to production systems.  You leverage high-performance libraries that interface to structured (time-series), semi-structured and unstructured data.  Each day brings a new challenge and a new reward.  Your efforts create the tools that are needed to keep the airspace safe!

BGI is looking to fill a dynamic position applying data science in aviation supporting efficient training and operations that saves lives and money. As a Data Scientist Principal Engineer the incumbent will apply algorithms to heterogeneous data in support of decision making processes that establish key infrastructure processes.

Job Responsibilities:
Author software to solve data science problems in aviation
Identify trends and anomalies using data science in complex big data analysis
Apply a variety of techniques to analyze heterogeneous data sources
Leverage data aggregation, statistical analysis, and data mining algorithms
Determine efficient data storage and access schemes
Interpret and validate results for decision making processes
Perform key roles in design, development, and implementation
Provide technical leadership to software engineers
Develop new solutions and products through implementation and leadership
Apply level of experience and judgement to support planning and accomplish goals
Develop scope, cost and schedule estimates
Create complete data analysis solutions for end-user needs
Support and educate customers in the field and products
Interface with customers to communicate scope, cost, and schedule

Qualifications:
***MUST BE A US CITIZEN***
Minimum: Bachelor’s in Computer Science or equivalent 
Master’s degree or PhD in computer science, applied math or engineering desired
25% travel expected

Experience:
Successful track record in leadership role
Experience developing new solutions leveraging multiple technologies
Use and integration of open source technologies
Related technologies/skills in data science, analytics, visual analytics, information visualization, Knowledge and Data Discovery (KDD), data mining, machine learning,  clustering, python (python3 preferred), SciPy, numpy, scikit-learn, pandas, Big Data, Hadoop, MapReduce, Spark, graph databases, Semantic Web (RDF), postgres, JavaScript, d3js, HDF5, object-oriented design
Experience with JavaScript and web-based tools desired

Special Knowledge and Skills :
Expert in use of Big Data platforms (e.g. Hadoop) and the tools in the ecosystem
Expert in identification of solutions to problems in data science 
Expert in software development for data analysis
Use of data science tools, specifically python and the SciPy stack (e.g. numpy, pandas, matplotlib, jupyter/ipython)
Experience visualizing and effectively communicating results using tools such as D3js and/or Tableau
Knowledge and application of KDD techniques (data mining, machine learning)
Domain knowledge of military aviation highly desired, especially experience related to analytics
